Today is August 22. What does that mean? It’s Kevin Love Trade Eve, of course.
Andrew Wiggins becomes eligible to be traded at 12:01 a.m. tonight, which means you should expect to see him shipped to Minnesota in return for Love at some point tomorrow. But, as we reported to you earlier this month, the Sixers will be involved in this trade as well.
An ESPN report today confirms that Minnesota will send part of their compensation package from Cleveland to Philadelphia in exchange for forward Thaddeus Young. Marc Stein writes that the Wolves will send Philly a future first round pick and the expiring contracts of Luc Richard Mbah A Moute and Alexey Shved in exchange for Young.
Flip Saunders and the Wolves brass reportedly see Young as an ideal, albeit temporary, replacement for Love. The terms of the deal mean both Wiggins and 2013 no. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett will stay in Minnesota.
The Sixers were reportedly hell-bent on bringing Bennett to their team, but Minnesota made it clear he wasn’t on the table. Despite Bennett’s rough rookie year, the Wolves see him as a key piece of their rebuild.
Wolves GM/ head coach Flip Saunders deserves a healthy round of applause for pulling off this deal. He traded Love, who was going to leave the team next year anyways, a first round pick, and two expiring contracts for Wiggins, Bennett and Young. Minnesota fans should be thrilled. The Wolves won’t make much noise this year, but they now have a great young nucleus in place.
The Cavs are winners in this trade too. They get their man in Love, who will pair with LeBron and Kyrie Irving to instantly form one of the best trios in the league.
