Mike Jones vs. Sebastian Lujan Recap and Analysis

By Nick Tywalk

Big time boxing returns to the Big Apple with the ultimate grudge match between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. Before we get to that, though, we have what looks like an excellent three-fight televised undercard, beginning with a welterweight clash between Mike Jones and Sebastian Lujan.

The tale of the tape shows that Jones is taller and slightly rangier. He's also three years younger than the 31-year old Lujan.

Lujan comes in with a 38-5-2 pro record with 24 KOs. Jones is perfect thus far as a pro at 25-0 with 19 KOs. Michael Buffer does the official introductions, and we are set for 12 scheduled rounds of boxing.

Round 1

Lujan is doing the early advancing, but both men seem to be feeling each other out. Both men try some hooks to the head. Jones keeps his shoulder forward to roll with punches as he tries to come underneath. Lujan does some body work but ends up eating body and head punches along the ropes. Jones sticks in a few jabs as he circles, then wobbles Lujan for a moment with a right hand. Another Jones right hand comes around Lujan's guard.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Jones

Round 2

Lujan doesn't wait this time, but he takes the first big power shot. Jones lands a low body shot and rips an uppercut that lands flush. Lujan's only plan sems to be ducking and bulling his way in, and it's not working so far. Jones backs his man up again and just misses his first few punches. His next flurry includes one right hand right on the button. Both boxers look for low hooks as they get tangled up for a second. Jones keeps looking to the body.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Jones

Round 3

Jones has to push Lujan off of him so he can throw more leather to the body. He throws some jabs as Lujan stays back for a moment. Jones chases his foe back into the corner and pops him with right hands. They bob and weave in the center of the ring narrowly missing right hands. Jones uses multiple jabs to keep his range, and the fans seem a tad restless.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Jones

Round 4

Lujan clubs his way forward with hooks, landing one or two. He's trying to force the action and is having a bit of success. Jones is busy covering up. There's a flurry to the body by Jones. Lujan takes them and keeps coming. He lands a left hook around Jones' guard. Jones fires back with his own hook. Head movement by both men as they jockey for position. Lujan keeps his foot on the gas all the way to the bell.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Lujan

Round 5

There's some good and take with Lujan landing a left and Jones responding with body shots. Lujan sort of jabs his way in and forces a clinch. He dodges some jabs while Jones tries to set up a straight right. Short uppercut by Jones on the inside. Plenty of swings and misses both ways, but Jones comes out on top with a four-punch combo. He lands a few to the body and follows with a right to the head in the closing seconds that gets Lujan's attention.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Jones

Round 6

Lujan barely escapes a big right hand along the ropes before charging in again. Jones lands a counter right and starts jabbing. Lujan is throwing a lot, but not very effectively at the moment, and the ref is staying busy keeping the boxers apart. Jones lands a right and shows the judges his work. They trade jabs while moving. Jones keeps up his work rate as the round peters out.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Jones

Round 7

Jones keeps his guard tight as Lujan resumes his relatively ineffective pressuring. He lands an uppercut as he tries to time Lujan. Lujan shakes his head after getting hit with some jabs. He keeps weaving his way in, but Jones is landing most of the punches. Nice left by Jones in the final 10 seconds.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Jones

Round 8

Emanuel Steward thinks Jones' only hurdle would be if he gets tired from having Lujan constantly in his face. They both land some hooks before the ref warns Jones for pushing Lujan's head down. Sharp left hand at the end of a Jones flurry. Lujan pushes Jones back, then both men take turns flurrying. The fans jeer again because lots of leather is flying without landing.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Jones

Round 9

Lujan tries mugging Jones again, but Mike pulls out and lands a quick right hand. He pops a jab too while Lujan backs away. Jones has a little more distance in this frame and it's really helping his accuracy. They trade for a moment with Jones getting the better of it. He flurries with both hands after taking some body shots.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Jones

Round 10

Steward says every round is pretty much the same. I agree. Lujan gets hit several times coming in. He finally forces Jones back to the ropes, but Mike manages to get out of danger and clinch. They lean on each other and try to work. Lujan hops forward, but Jones holds his ground and fires body and head shots. Lujan's hooks are answered by Jones' uppercuts. There's a nice straight right by Jones too as the round ends.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Jones

Round 11

Jones has to be wary as Lujan finds a second wind to throw more punches. Both men are still moving their heads well to avoid eating too many flush punches. Jones triples his left hook before getting hit with an accidental head butt. Steward thinks Jones could score a knockdown if he got some space, but Lujan isn't giving it to him. Lujan tries to show he's unfazed after taking two to the head. He does get hurt by a body shot, leaving him a sitting duck for a right-left combination to the head.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Jones

Round 12

Lampley discusses how the crowd is not feeling this fight despite plenty of punches being thrown. Jones flurries to the body but without too much pop. Another Jones body blow looks a little low. Another low shot sets up a right hook to Lujan's head. A straight right wobbles Lujan back to the ropes with some theatrics. Sebastian lands a rare right hand before getting forced back to the corner. Jones throws to the bell, and we'll go to the cards.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Jones

Tylwalk: 119-109 Jones

The judges score it 118-110 and 119-109 twice, all to the winner by unanimous decison, Mike "Machine Gun" Jones.
