Almost immediately after news that Jay Triano had been let go by the Toronto Raptors hit the newswire, rumors that New York Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni was interested in filling the void began to circulate.
Some combination of the past relationship between D’Antoni and Raptors GM, Bryan Colangelo, and the former’s somewhat uncertain future with the Knicks would seemingly be reason enough to speculate that a reunion isn’t completely out of the question. However, according to D’Antoni’s agent, the whole thing isn’t even a possibility.
“There’s absolutely no truth to [Mike wanting to go to Toronto],” Warren LeGarie told the New York Post. “It’s amusing.”
Ouch. It’s not just out of the question, it’s amusing. Of course, it'll be interesting to see how amusing D'Antoni and his reps find this situation when they're booted from New York in favor of Mark Jackson, Isiah Thomas or whichever other incompetent coach is available next summer.
For now, it appears as though Toronto will need to seek out another coach who can show them how to not play defense.
