Mexico Primera Division Rundown: Castillo, Orozco-Fiscal and More

Another week in the Clausura produced yet another exciting weekend for US players down south. The weekend started on Friday night as Michael Orozco-Fiscal and his fellow Gladiadores defeated Estudiantes Tecos by the score of 2-0. With last week’s shut out over Pumas, the Orange, California native’s defensive line has now gone 180 minutes without allowing a goal. Not too shabby for a guy people have been labeling an international bust.

Moving on to Saturday, Tijuana returned to the friendly confines of Estadio Caliente and debuted their new black home jerseys. Despite a shaky performance last week, Edgar Castillo went the full 90 again in Tijuana’s 1-0 win over Monterrey. This time however, drawing praise from fans and coaches alike. Splitting time between the US U-23 camp at the Home Depot Center, and club duty, Joe Corona contributed 21 minutes for Tijuana as a second half sub. Newly acquired Greg Garza did not make the bench for the encounter.

Other Yanks who didn’t see the field this past weekend were Herculez Gomez of Santos Laguna, and Jonathan Bornstein of Tigres. Gomez did however make the bench, while Bornstein did not. Potential Yank Diego De La Torre was an unused sub in Toluca’s controversial 1-1 draw with Club America.

In the Yank vs. Yank encounter of the weekend, Jose Francisco Torres played the full length of the match yet again as Pachuca beat Puebla 3-1. DaMarcus Beasley came off the bench for La Franja (translate: The Sash) and played the final 28 minutes.
