As I stated in my NFL Epic Fails column Monday, Detroit Lions lineman Ndamukong Suh saying that he slipped and lost his balance in his post game press conference was much like telling someone, “I slipped and fell and the way I landed… your wife is now pregnant.”
When Suh slipped and lost his balance stomped on Green Bay Packers guard Evan Dietrich-Smith during Detroit’s Thanksgiving Day loss to the Packers, he was correctly ejected. On Tuesday the NFL promptly handed out a two game suspension for Suh’s on-field extracurricular activity. Like lion chasing its prey, Suh didn’t waste any time and immediately appealed the suspension.
On Thursday afternoon, via conference call, Suh will present his appeal to Art Shell, a joint appointee of the NFL and the players’ association for such cases. If Suh looses the appeal, he will miss both Sunday’s game at New Orleans and the Lions’ Dec. 11th home game against Minnesota. Suh will be barred from practice and the team’s facility while suspended.
I’m not sure what Suh’s position here is going to be. When Albert Haynesworth stomped on Andre Gurode’s head on October 2, 2006, he received a five game suspension. Ok, so it wasn’t Dietrich-Smith’s head he stepped on, but it’s not a five game suspension either…. Suh already tried the, “I slipped” thing, and Shell isn’t going to buy that. Will he say that he was angry and meant to stomp the ground, but Dietrich-Smith slid his body under his foot?
I’m virtually certain that the suspension will be upheld so there isn’t much anticipation there. I’m really interested in finding out what Suh’s position / excuse will be though. Hopefully we’ll find out so he can be made fun of some more, a simple “the suspension has been upheld” would be anti-climactic.
For those of you not familiar with Suh and his antics during his short NFL career, here’s a brief video that should get you up to snuff.
