Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Brandon Vera: "I Know Winning isn't Enough"

Publish date:

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua doesn't plan on wasting any time come Saturday night. With a future title shot hanging in the balance, Rua knows exactly what he has to do against Brandon Vera at UFC on Fox: Shogun Vs. Vera.

"I think this fight with Vera is going to be a great fight while it lasts," Rua said. "I know winning isn't enough; I have to look very impressive and I am planning on a fast knockout like I did against Forrest Griffin."

Rua earned his 17th career knockout victory last year when he dropped the former UFC 205-pound champion Griffin in just under two minutes. While he was defeated by Dan Henderson late in 2011, he has scored career wins over such notables as Lyoto Machida, Chuck Liddell, Alistair Overeem and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

After defeating Rua, Henderson has been waiting in the wings for his shot at UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. "Bones" won the belt from Rua in 2011, so there is plenty of motivation for "Shogun" in this fight.

"I want the winner of Jones vs. Henderson," Rua said. "The fight I had with Henderson was a great fight, the fight of the year. But the loss to Jones I can't live with. I could have done so much better and I want to fight him again."
