Greg Biffle may have taken first place at Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400, but it was Mark Martin who was feeling like a big winner when it was all said and done.
On the 64th lap and with the lead in hand, Martin found himself part of a wreck featuring Bobby Labonte and Kasey Kahne. As he slid sideways helplessly down pit road, it looked as though he was doomed to hit the wall driver’s side first. Fortunately, at the last second, the car’s momentum carried it forward more than expected and it wound up crashing into the wall with the left rear side.
"That was a pretty freak angle," Martin said afterward. "I'm not sure what you could do. It could have been really bad if I would have got in that hole a little deeper where it caught me in the door instead of the crush area.
"I was hoping that I was going to miss the pit wall completely and not tear the car up."
