Timothy Bradley wasn’t the opponent that most envisioned Manny Pacquiao going up against on June 9, but he’s who we ended up with. And despite all of the pessimism, negativity and gloom in regards to this just being a filler match, Saturday’s showdown actually has the potential to be very, very interesting.
Pacquiao, 33, comes into this one straight off his worst performance in years. (We won't even get into the out-of-ring stuff.) Juan Manuel Marquez pushed the Filipino champion like few others have in recent times and, in doing so, may very well have provided Bradley and his people with a blueprint on how to make Manny sweat. Aside from his nonexistent knockout power (which, admittedly, is a huge problem), Bradley, 28, has all of the traits necessary (athleticism, stamina, agility, hunger, etc.) to make a legitimate match out of this thing.
Does that means the oddsmakers are wrong to insert Pacquiao as a heavy favorite? Of course not. Manny has taken on and fought off all challengers like the No. 1 or No. 2 pound-for-pounder that he unquestionably is; but it does add a certain element of excitement to the proceedings. This isn’t Pacquiao versus an old, worn down “Sugar” Shane Mosley – this is the Filipino champ taking on a young, spry star on the come up and with something to prove.
Again, nobody is pretending that this is the fight that we all wanted to see all along – but it’s going to be a very intriguing match nevertheless.
In preparation for what’s about to go down, we’ve compiled some of the best quotes to date from Pacquiao, Bradley, Bob Arum, Freddie Roach and the rest of the gang. Our personal favorite is: “I can't wait to get in there and kill this dude.”
