Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. Could Happen in September 2013

A super fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. was initially supposed to be the ultimate debate settler. When it was first discussed, it was a bout pitting the two best pound-for-pounders in the world against one another in a battle would have determined who the true top dog was.

Now it just feels like unfinished business.

Following Pacquiao’s knockout defeat to Juan Manuel Marquez, it is impossible to make the case for him being one of the world’s top one or two pound-for-pounders anymore. Similarly, given the trouble he had during the first half of the Miguel Cotto fight, one would be hard pressed to say that Mayweather is still at the top of his game.

And yet, despite all that, even though we know that this fight isn’t what it once could have been, it’s hard not to want to see it happen just because there has been so much talk about it. It wouldn’t settle anything. It wouldn’t answer any questions. It was just be, from a purely superficial standpoint, a fun match-up to watch.

The question is, will it ever happen?

Mayweather will fight either Robert Guerrero or Canelo Alvarez this coming May. Recent reports indicate that it will be Guerrero; however, 11 days ago Canelo made it seem like he was close to a deal. Either way, the undefeated champ will be booked for May. That being said – his September is wide open. And if he wants to fight twice this year -- like he previously said he did -- then September is the ideal time to schedule a second match.

Who will be available for a bout in September?

"[April] is too soon after [a knockout like that]. We spoke about [his next fight]. I told him that I think he should come back around September and he agreed with me," Freddie Roach said recently (via Boxing Scene).

There is no guarantee that this fight will ever happen. Moreover, there isn’t even a guarantee that Mayweather actually wants to fight twice this year. If he does, though, then taking on Pacquiao would make a whole lot of sense.
