Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Could Still Happen, According to Bob Arum

The world would be a better place if we could just get a final word on the status of a possible super fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Forget the fact that this bout wouldn’t be anywhere even remotely as good as it once could have been; the major failing on the part of all involved over the past couple of years is their inability to acknowledge their own failings as they pertain to putting this thing together.

When you think about it, the reason we haven’t been able to shut the door on Pacquiao-Mayweather is because both fighters and their direct associates refuse to take responsibility for botched negotiations. If any side had just come out, at any point, and simply said that they weren’t interested – that would have been that. Instead, everyone just wants to use the idea of a possible super fight to secure attention for themselves.

Case in point: Bob Arum.

During a recent conversation with Brad Cooney of The Examiner, Arum said this: "Never say never. This fight could still happen. It wouldn't have the attraction that it once had, but it's still possible that this fight can happen."

Yes, it could still happen – if Arum actually made it happen. He is one of the only people in the world -- outside of the fighters involved -- who had enough sway to set this match up. He opted not to.

Moreover, as recently as last month Pacquiao’s camp insisted that they didn’t see their guy coming back until September 2013. And then, just last week, Arum said this to TMZ: "We're gonna, I think, do another fight with Juan Manuel Marquez…He ran into a really good right hand, and we'll see what happens next time."

So if Pacquiao isn’t going to fight until September 2013 and that fight will be against Marquez, how exactly is Pacquiao-Mayweather a legitimate possibility? Are they really trying to sell us on this thing going down in 2014?

Not going to happen.

We’ve been saying this for months and we’ll say it again: either this fight happens in 2013, or it isnt going to happen at all.
