Manny Pacquiao’s Team Thinks Robert Guerrero Will Beat Floyd Mayweather

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. aren’t scheduled to fight at any point in the foreseeable future. In fact, both have anywhere from one to three opponents that they will almost definitely face before the prospect of them meeting for a 'super fight' can even be discussed. And yet, despite the fact that clearly neither man has any intention of fighting the other, they never seem to have a shortage of things to say about one another.

In the aftermath of Pacquiao’s recent loss to Juan Manuel Marquez, Mayweather made it a point to note that he had beaten Marquez handily when they met. Similarly, while promoting his last fight, Pacquiao made it a point to name drop his arch rival and the possibility of them squaring off on numerous occasions. It’s obvious why both men play this game – they know that the Pacquiao-Mayweather rivalry is fascinating. It isn’t particularly entertaining, given that they haven’t and likely won’t actually fight, but it’s very fascinating. And because both realize that there is still a ton of intrigue surrounding their little rivalry, they always make it a point to name drop each other.

Recently, while speaking to the Bleacher Report, Freddie Roach decided to get in on the action. When asked for his thoughts on Mayweather-Robert Guerrero, the Hall of Fame trainer had this to say: "I think Floyd picked the wrong guy. Guerrero has a great shot of winning that fight. He's very physical, very rough in there and he'll take people out of their game-plan."

How could Roach be so sure? Well, because he is actually very familiar with Guerrero’s work.

"He trained in my gym for about three years, he and Manny Pacquiao sparred thousands of rounds. He's definitely a high-level opponent and I give him a chance to pull the upset."

So there you go. Will Guerrero beat Mayweather? Of course not. Does he have a chance? A very, very tiny one. Certainly not a ‘great’ chance. But did anyone really expect Roach, a key figure in Pacquiao’s camp, to praise Mayweather?

Interestingly enough, during that same interview, Roach was asked about whether Pacquiao could still beat Mayweather. His response was about what you’d expect.

"We can set some traps for Mayweather that'll give him a lot of difficulty and I think he knows that. I welcome that fight and would love the challenge and I'm sure Manny would also."

They’ll never stop teasing us with the prospect. Never.
