Manny Pacquiao will fight Juan Manuel Marquez at some point in 2013. Even though neither fighter has officially signed on the dotted line yet, everything coming from both of their camps indicates that they know a fifth showdown is inevitable. Marquez will continue to play it coy, but that isn’t stopping him from traveling to Macau with Bob Arum next week. Coincidentally, Macau is where his proposed rematch with Pacquiao is supposed to take place.
So while we have a pretty clear idea of who Pacquiao will square off against in 2013, we still don’t know where and when. Macau, as noted, has been described as the most likely destination; however, during a recent interview with Ronnie Nathanielsz of the Manila Standard, Pacquiao advisor Michael Koncz indicated that they may be considering someplace else entirely.
According to Koncz, if his team isn’t able to lock down the Venetian Macau Resort Hotel for a fifth fight between Pacquiao and Marquez, they’ll scrap that as a possible venue and look elsewhere. While that’s an interesting new development, it wasn’t the biggest bomb Koncz dropped during his interview. No, the biggest bomb was him saying that Pacquiao could return in ‘September or October.’ Up until now, everyone -- including Pacquiao himself -- said that September was the target return date.
It’s always best to take everything and anything Koncz says with a grain of salt. (Remember, this is the guy who tried to get Pacquiao into an April tune-up.) He is wrong far more often than he’s right. However, even he isn’t weird enough to come out and completely contradict his own fighter if there isn’t at least a kernel of truth to what he’s saying.
Time will tell, though.
