Manny Pacquiao Gets Former NBA Player Released From Team

Boxer Manny Pacquiao, who is also a congressman in his home country of the Philippines, is listed as the player-coach for the Kia Carnival team in the Philippine Basketball Association and in his four games with the team this season, Pacquiao has scored just one point.

Former NBA player Daniel Orton apparently doesn’t know how highly regarded Pacquiao is in the Philippines. After a loss to Pacquiao’s Carnival, Orton criticized his basketball ability.

"(Pacquiao playing) is a joke," said Orton. "Professional boxer? Yeah. Congressman? All right. But professional basketball player? Seriously? It's a joke."

The comments got Orton — who played for the NBA's Magic, Thunder and 76ers during his career — released from the Purefoods Star Hotshots after just three games with the team. He was also fined $5,650.

"Everyone is angry at him," Hotshots top administrator Rene Pardo said. "It is like he went to the United States and insulted the name of Martin Luther King."

It is unknown whether Pacquiao will continue to play occasionally with the team while he prepares for the big fight against Floyd Mayweather, May 2.
