There is a new money team in town, folks, and it’s made up of Manny Pacquiao, 50 Cent and Michael Koncz.
A few months ago, 50 Cent and Floyd Mayweather Jr. rocked the boxing world to its very core when they announced that they were planning to start their own promotional company. This was seen as something of a big deal because of how difficult it is to break into the industry.
For better or worse, the Sweet Science is filled with a bunch of veterans who aren’t particularly enthused about letting newcomers take a slice of their pie. In 50 and Mayweather, however, you had two guys with the name recognition and capital to make a dent, regardless of whether folks wanted to let them go through the front door or not.
Unfortunately, the pair’s friendship apparently took a serious hit when Mayweather went to prison a few months ago. As we noted on Opposing Views earlier this week, 50 Cent has publicly acknowledged that the two are on not-so-great terms right now, and that tension has manifested itself into the rapper-turned-mogul seemingly striking a deal with Mayweather’s arch rival.
In a recent interview with Boxing Scene, Michael Koncz opened up about his, Pacquiao’s and 50’s plans to form their own promotional company.
“50 Cent and I have been talking now for maybe the last two months. They approached us with the idea to form a promotional company,” Koncz said.
“Initially it was going to be 50 Cent, Manny and Floyd. But right now I don’t think Floyd is going to be a part of it. I explained the idea to Manny. We already have a promotional company, MP Promotions, and we have already done three separate promotions from Top Rank … on a small scale. I have to take the blame for that. I’m in charge of it. There is an element missing there, but I have so much to do with Manny – that I haven’t got that company to where I want it.
“I think with 50 Cent, with his entertainment connections and his popularity there, combining that with Manny’s popularity and expertise in boxing –- we can bring a new flavor to boxing -– we can excite some young boxers and I think we can sign some top quality boxers. I spoke to 50 Cent (Wednesday) and confirmed that we’re going to go forward. Manny is coming here this weekend for other business, but we’re all excited about it. With 50′s influence in the music industry – we want to put a different flavor on the shows.”
There is so much to unravel there – where do we even begin? First of all, Pacquiao and Mayweather were actually considering opening up a company together? These two haven’t been able to work out terms for a super fight in three years but they were down to go into business with one another? Amazing. Beyond that, how influential is 50 Cent? Somehow, in a span of months, he’s managed to forge alliances with and between the biggest names in boxing without breaking a sweat. Has anyone ever come in and straight up dominated the business end of the Sweet Science like he has?
Finally and most importantly, something to keep in mind: if this comes to fruition, it could be the final nail in the coffin of Pacquiao-Mayweather. If you thought these guys hated one another before, how will their relationship be when Manny steals his rival’s best friend? 50 was supposed to be the mediator who brought everyone together, however, he may ultimately end up being the one who tears everything apart, once and for all.
