A man with the nickname of "Moose" is attempting to start a brand new basketball league that will feature only white players. Oh, and he says there's "nothing hatred about it."
The All-American Basketball Alliance issued a news release, a casting call of sorts for certain kinds of players:
"Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league."
The release also said the inaugural season will start in June in 12 cities in the Southeast. So far, cities are not exactly lining up to land the coveted franchises. In fact, self-proclaimed league Commissioner Don "Moose" Lewis says he has gotten threats, and several cities have told him to stay away, including Augusta, Georgia. Mayor Deke Copenhaver said he does not support the proposed league.
"As a sports enthusiast, I have always supported bringing more sporting activities to Augusta," he said. "However, in this instance I could not support in good conscience bringing in a team that did not fit with the spirit of inclusiveness that I, along with many others, have worked so hard to foster in our city."
Lewis actually has a rationale for what he is doing.
"I don't hate anyone of color," he said. "But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here's a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like."
Lewis said he's no fan of what he calls "street-ball" played by whom he calls "people of color." He pointed out recent incidents in the NBA, including Gilbert Arenas' indefinite suspension after bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room, as examples of fans' dissatisfaction with the way current professional sports are run.
"Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?" he asked. "That's the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction."
If the league ever gets off the ground -- a big if -- a single entity will own all of the teams. $10,000 will buy you the right to be a "licensee" of the team in your local town. Lewis actually expects to find 12 of these "licensees."
