With National Signing Day a little over a week away, Charlie Strong is trying to solidify what could be a top 25 recruiting class. This past weekend, Strong did not host as large a group of recruits as last week. In fact, there were only three visitors and they were all local stars: DeVante Parker, Jamon Brown, and Jalen Harrington. Those three have been considered very solid commitments, so there was not expected to be much breaking news involving those visitors.
However, the recruits we were paying attention to were four-star safety Gerrod Holliman and three-star cornerback Andrew Johnson. You might recall, both originally pledged to Ole Miss, but de-committed. After re-opening their recruitment, Holliman committed to Louisville during halftime of the US Army All-American Bowl. Johnson committed shortly thereafter.
The reason we were watching Holliman and Johnson is because they were taking official visits to Oxford this weekend, leading many Cardinal fans to worry about the possibility of losing the two highly touted prospects back to the Rebels.
Well, they have concluded their visit and by all accounts, Holliman and Johnson still intend to sign with Louisville on Signing Day.
That’s the good news.
The not so good news involves another defensive back who had been committed to Louisville for quite some time. Three-star cornerback Jaquese Kirk tripped to Vanderbilt this week and loved it so much he chose to switch his pledge to the Commodores, thus causing Pinkie contributor Guy to do cartwheels.
This news was both surprising and not surprising at the same time, if that’s even possible.
It was unsurprising from the standpoint of when you looked at the number of prospects already committed to Louisville, then looked at the number of prospects still being recruited, you knew there were going to be some guys who would either have to look elsewhere or accept grayshirt offers. We saw some of that beginning with the de-commitment of Fern Creek’s Jerrell Moore and parting of ways with Cincinnati cornerback Chris Dukes.
However, it was surprising, at least to me, because I thought Jacquese Kirk was one of the more talented defensive back commitments Louisville had, and with Vanderbilt having a new coach and a traditionally poor peforming football program, it does make you stop and think. But, Kirk loved his visit and chose to go to elsewhere.
Finally, big Denzel Perryman, a linebacker from Miami, committed to to his hometown Hurricanes on Saturday. Perryman was being recruited by the Cards at one time, but had fallen off the Louisville radar of late. He chose the Canes over offers from Florida, Florida State, and USC.
At the end of the day, Charlie Strong is going to produce a highly acclaimed class. Whether or not it ends up being a top 25 class, we’ll have to wait and see. Regardless of where this class finishes in recruiting rankings, the good news for Louisville fans is the fact this class could very well be the best in program history.
Not bad for a guy only on the job less than a year and a half.
