Lolo Jones Cries on Today Show after Finishing 4th in Women’s 100-Meter Hurdles (Video)

Lolo Jones finished fourth in Tuesday’s 100-meter women’s hurdles final.

Depending on how you want to see it, she either performed admirably or she was a bitter, overrated disappointment.

If you subscribe to the first theory, you note that Jones inarguably ran better than she had all year at the 2012 Olympics, and that her coming off an injury only compounded how impressive that fourth-place finish was. If you subscribe to the second theory, you think that Jones’ finish was unimpressive, predictable, and that she continues to get way more attention than a hurdler of her stature deserves.

Is it fair to blame athletes for receiving attention when, really, they don’t dictate how the media covers them? No, of course not – but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen anyway.

On Wednesday, less than 24 hours after her heartbreaking near-medal finish, Jones appeared on NBC's Today Show and broke down when talking about everything she had been through recently.

At the end of the day, it’s inevitable that some people will hate Jones and/or think she’s overrated. That’s just the way our world works. Some people love you, others hate you. The really bothersome part about everything that’s transpired over the last week, though, is that it clearly has a really damaging effect on Jones. Most athletes can block out the outside noise from haters – she doesn’t seem to be able to.

Ultimately, if she can develop a thicker skin, it probably won't get her any closer to winning a medal, but it will definitely give her some additional peace of mind.
