Lions’ Calvin Johnson Wins 2013 Madden Cover, Unfortunately

Is the Madden Curse powerful enough to take down Megatron? Let’s hope not.

Detroit Lions superstar wide receiver, Calvin Johnson, beat out Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and a myriad of other NFL big names to earn his place on the cover of Madden NFL 13. The announcement came on Wednesday’s edition of SportsNation.

According to the good folks at ESPN, Johnson brought in over 651,000 votes. Unfortunately, while we do have the final ballot numbers, we don’t know how many of those votes came from angry Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings fans hoping to take down the Lions’ best player.

For his part, Johnson seemed to be handling his inevitable doom relatively well.

"Man, it's great," Johnson told ESPN. "Just to see yourself on this Madden (cover) and seeing all the guys that have been on Madden? C'mon, man."

Johnson is coming off a year where he racked up some impressive totals: 96 receptions, 1,681 yards and 16 scores. For his troubles, Detroit rewarded him with a hefty eight-year deal worth up to $132 million. Too bad they inked him to that new contract before they knew that the fans would give him this dubious honor, though.

For anyone who doesn’t think that the Madden Curse is legit – take a look back at recent history. Over the last ten years, aside from Drew Brees in 2011 and Ray Lewis in 2005, every player who has appeared on the cover of this cult favorite video game has gotten badly hurt at some point shortly thereafter. And heck, even those two guys experienced some injuries, just not to the same degree as everyone else.

Players who the Madden Curse has taken down: Peyton Hillis (2012), Troy Polamalu (2010), Brett Favre (2009), Vince Young (2008), Shaun Alexander (2007), Donovan McNabb (2006), Michael Vick (2004), Marshall Faulk (2003), Daunte Culpepper (2002) and the list goes on beyond that.

Bottom line: if you can stay off the cover, you should.
