The Last Time the Knicks Won a Playoff Game

The Knicks have lost 13 straight playoff games dating back to April 29th 2001 – so roughly 11 years. Hard to imagine when you think about how they constantly refer to their home arena as “The Mecca of basketball.”

I actually wanted this Knick team to be good. It really started to seem like Carmelo was ready to take that next step

He was getting genuinely excited during games, and running around beating his chest while screaming things like, “This is my house!” and “La La is MY woman!”

But then I remembered that Carmelo is Carmelo and that the Knicks are the Knicks.

There are some realities that Knicks fans are going to have to face: Jeremy Lin is an average NBA starting point guard at best, Amar’e will never be the player he was during the first half of last season ever again, Madison Square Garden hasn’t had a relevant game since Jeff Van Gundy was hanging off of Alonzo Mourning’s leg, and most importantly – Carmelo and Amar’e can’t play together. Their games require them to be the focal point of the offense. Amar’e isn’t going to bang down low to get his points, he’s going to fill the lane and screen and roll. Both of those things require someone passing the ball to him and with the offense flowing through Carmelo, that won’t happen.

The talent on the Knicks is obvious, but – like Spike Lee – it’s all just show. The Knicks are a very poorly constructed team and until they fix their self-inflicted personnel issues, the team is doomed to mediocrity. Which basically just means they will be the 5th-8th seed in the East for 3-5 years and never make it out of the second round.

In celebration of the Knicks aggressive mediocrity, the internet is blowing up with different things that were going on when the Knicks last won a playoff game. Below, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorites and added some of my own.

The last time the Knicks won a playoff game…

Bryce Harper was nine.

David Duval was the No. 2 golfer in the world.

Slick Willy hadn’t been out of the office for six months.

Recently injured Yankees Ccoser – and ET lookalike – Mariano Rivera, recorded his 171st save in a Roger Clemens victory for the Yankees – the 263rd of the Rocket’s career. Rivera went on to save 608 games and that  HGH using perjurer ended his career with 363 wins.

This was the No. 1 song in the country:

Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were a couple.

Mark Zuckerberg was in high school.

The first Harry Potter movie hadn’t been released.

People would know where Chandra Levy was for another 24 hours.

“Driven” starring Sylvester Stallone had just replaced my all time favorite, “Bridget Jones’ Diary” as the number one movie at the box office.

These people were “straight”: Neil Patrick Harris, Portia De Rossi, Wanda Sykes, Clay Aiken (shocker!), Ricky Martin, Lance Bass, Rosie O’Donnell and Adam Lambert.

Michael Jordan was just a part-owner of the Wizards and hadn’t yet tarnished his repuation by coming back.

At the airport you could still wait at the gate if you weren’t a passenger.

Gas only cost 1.70

But most importantly, since the Knicks last won a playoff GAME, there have been 27 teams that have won a playoff series.

Mecca of basketball my ass.

Play me out Bill Burr…
