Justin Upton Rumors: Tigers, Red Sox, Yankees, Rangers All in the Mix?

The Arizona Diamondbacks have insisted publicly that they probably won’t trade Justin Upton, but nobody is really buying that. Despite the fact that Upton is only one season removed from his monster 2011 campaign, a lot of people believe that Arizona’s desire to strengthen certain positions this winter will motivate them to make a deal.

"I'm open-minded and will hear what people have to say," GM Kevin Towers said recently (via ESPN). "If a deal presents itself that makes the Diamondbacks better by trading Justin Upton, I think I need to be open-minded to that. The last two years there has not been a deal that we felt makes us better. That's why we've retained him and we've kept him.

"We want to win in 2013. He will not be an easy guy for us to move. I think we've said that. It's probably unlikely we end up doing something with him, but if somebody is willing to step up and we think it's a deal that's going to make the Diamondbacks better going forward, we'll talk about trading him."

Here are the latest rumors on where Upton could be dispatched, if he is in fact traded.

Via CBS: The Red Sox, Phillies, Yankees, Rangers, Tigers and Pirates are among many teams looking for outfielders. Some, including the Yankees, may not be stocked with the right young players, to make an Upton deal.

Via New York Post: Though Arizona’s Justin Upton has become available at the GM Meetings, a person involved in discussions said, “The Yankees are not on him.”

Boston Herald: It is not known yet if the Red Sox have held discussions with Arizona earlier or here at the GM meetings, but there is little uncertainty that they will explore the trade to discover Upton’s acquisition costs, which will be a drain to any team making the deal.

I'm told the Tigers are doing due diligence on Upton, doing background work on him. Don't know if they've talked specifics with Dbacks.

Time will tell which (if any) scenario ultimately works out.
