Jets' Rex Ryan, Patriots' Bill Belichick Named NFL’s Most Overrated Coaches

Remember how Rex Ryan was the coach that everyone wanted to play for two years ago? While Tom Coughlin’s players were lamenting about what a horrible guy he was and others were sitting on the hottest of hot seats, Ryan seemingly reigned supreme as anointed one. And it made sense at the time – he was the face of the most promising team in the league during a patch when there were no clear top dogs in sight.

Oh how things change.

This year the New York Jets are an embarrassing 3-5 through nine weeks, and Ryan is being widely regarded as the most overrated coach in the whole league. In a Sporting News poll of 103 players from 27 different teams, Ryan was dubbed the most overhyped by a cool 35 percent. The next highest recipient got 16 percent of the vote. That’s a pretty sizable margin.

While Ryan winning this poll in a landslide isn’t surprising, Bill Belichick getting the second-most votes sort of is. There are only two possible explanations for him being on this list: 1.) guys on opposing squads just hate him or 2.) people think that anyone with Tom Brady on the roster should win three Super Bowls.

Aside from that, the voting breakdown makes sense. You can check out the whole list below.

Rex Ryan, Jets 35

Bill Belichick, Patriots 16

Andy Reid, Eagles 9

Mike Shanahan, Redskins 8

Mike Tomlin, Steelers 4

Jeff Fisher, Rams 3

Jim Harbaugh, 49ers 3

Norv Turner, Chargers 3

Pete Carroll, Seahawks 2

Jason Garrett, Cowboys 2

John Harbaugh, Ravens 2
