Jets' Kenrick Ellis Granted Split Sentence, Will be Able to Attend Training Camp

New York Jets defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis was given a 45-day jail sentence for his role in a fight that took place at Hampton University back in 2010.

Ellis’ 45-day sentence obviously gets in the way of his training camp.

According to Brian Costello of the New York Post, the powers that be have granted the 24-year-old a split-sentence. This means he can still go practice with the Jets during the most important time before the season starts.

“Ellis goes to jail Friday at 6 p.m. and will be released July 9. He will then have to return to jail March 1, 2013 to complete the 45-day sentence.

“The court also gave Ellis permission to participate in a work release program pending the jail’s approval. Ellis would be permitted to work out during the day with the coaches at Hampton University, where he attended college.”

Ellis will be battling for the DT spot as the Jets make their move from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3.
