For some reason, James Franco was given the honor of starting the Daytona 500 on Sunday. His lone responsibility was spending a few seconds reading instructions for how all the racers should conduct themselves, and then uttering a modified version of the phrase: “Gentleman, start your engines.”
Obviously because Danica Patrick was in this, it should have been either “Drivers, start your engines,” or “Gentleman and Danica, start your engines.”
Instead, Franco offered this mangled introduction: “Drivers and Danica, start your engines.” The implication here, of course, is that Patrick is not a real driver.
Whether it was an accidental slip-up by Franco or him just purposely being the annoying circus clown that he has been recognized as for years now is unknown, but either way, he botched the beginning of what could be a historic race.
