How Will Injury Impact Daniel Cormier's Fight Prep for Josh Barnett?

While training with Luke Rockhold for his title defense against Keith Jardine in December, Daniel Cormier hit Rockhold with an uppercut. The result left "DC" with another broken hand following surgery and rehab for the same injury in his win over Antonio Silva earlier in the year.

Now, Cormier and Josh Barnett are set to complete the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix on May 19 on Showtime. A location for the bout has not been set, but it is likely headed towards San Jose, California - Cormier's hometown.

"The biggest issue for me was that I didn't improve as much as I usually do in between fights because of the injury," said Cormier, in a recent interview with "I'm normally improving constantly because I'm so young in the game. I haven't been able to do that."

Zuffa, which owns Strikeforce and the UFC, has announced that the heavyweight division within Strikeforce will seize to exist following the GP and one more bout. The UFC has been signing up talent from the division, including the likes of Alistair Overeem, Antonio Silva and Fabricio Werdum.

For Cormier, he knows taking down someone with the resume of Barnett would be a great achievement in his career, adding, "Then to go over into the UFC with the belt, undefeated, it would be a pretty good situation."
