Gray Maynard Earns Split Decision Victory Over Clay Guida at UFC on FX 4

Publish date:

It wasn't pretty, and it was filled with plenty of booing from the crowd, but Gray Maynard pulled out a split decision victory over Clay Guida in the main event of UFC on FX: Maynard vs. Guida Friday night.

Maynard tried to force the action late in the fourth, dropping his hands, and Guida took the chance. However, Maynard almost locked in a submission via guillotine choke that likely gave him the round.

"I wanted to start doing that in the first round, but I thought I'd be respectful," Maynard said. "The stuff got old."

Maynard was able to rebound from a loss to Frankie Edgar last year in a bout for the UFC lightweight title. "The Bully" is hoping for a fourth meeting with Edgar down the road, but "The Answer" first gets to face Benson Henderson for the belt.

"I want that belt," Maynard said. "I think there should be a fourth fight. I want that fourth fight, I want that belt."

Guida used a plan of attack that kept him from getting in very close against Maynard, as he used his speed and quickness to avoid much action. Maynard was upset on several instances, flipping Guida off at one point and having some choice words for him as the two exited the Octagon.

"I thought Guida was coming to fight," Maynard said. "I wanted to get bloody. I wanted to prove to people I could go a hard five (rounds); I thought Guida was coming to do it....but (Guida) had a game plan, whatever it was."

Maynard is now 11-1-1 with one no-contest in his career, while Guida falls to 29-10.
