Gilbert Melendez Wants a Shot at Benson Henderson

Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez believes he is the one to defeat UFC 155-pound champion Benson Henderson. Recently, Henderson defended his title against Nate Diaz, a teammate of Melendez under Cesar Gracie.

"I want to fight Benson Henderson," said Melendez, in an interview with Bleacher Report. "I think a champion vs. champion fight makes absolute sense right now. I think we already know how things are going to work out between Benson Henderson and a lot of other lightweight fighters in the UFC, but I'm that mystery fighter."

Henderson earned the title from Frankie Edgar, and defended it successfully vs. Edgar, as well. He has not lost since entering the UFC.

"I have been around for a long time, and have been the top lightweight in the world before Benson or any of these other guys," Melendez said. "I think I have a lot of answers for his style."

Melendez was scheduled to defend his belt against Pat Healy - twice - but a shoulder injury will keep him on the sidelines as Strikeforce likely puts on a final card in January. "El Nino" said he doesn't care where he fights Henderson, adding, "We can do it in the Octagon or the Strikeforce cage - it doesn't matter to me. Henderson is the fight I want, and let's make it happen."
