George Groves preserved his unbeaten professional record with a sixth round TKO of Mexican Francisco Sierra in San Jose, California.
Making his first appearance in nearly a year, Groves showed one or two signs of rust as he was forced to contend with a cut which may derail his hopes of facing Kenny Anderson at Wembley in the autumn.
The heavy handed Sierra was keen to target the injury as the pair clashed heads in the third round, however Groves’ growing maturity allowed him to avoid further problems as he found a two shot combination three rounds later to inflict a sixth defeat of the Mexican’s career.
Groves improves to 15-0 and will be hopeful that his first appearance on the other side of the Atlantic will have endeared him to the American boxing public.
The race is now on to fulfill his date with Anderson- a foe he previously tangled with in November 2010 when he was provided with his sternest career examination to date.
