Frank Mir on Fighting Daniel Cormier: "It Really Makes All the Sense in the World"

Publish date:

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir was a surprise name when it was announced who Daniel Cormier would meet next. Cormier won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix title earlier this year, and will compete for the final time in the promotion against Mir this fall.

Mir (16-6) is a former two-time UFC heavyweight champion who recently was defeated by Junior dos Santos in his quest to claim the title again. Cormier (10-0) stopped Josh Barnett for the Strikeforce crown, and is an ex-Olympic wrestler, as well.

"It makes all the sense in the world when you really think about it," said UFC president Dana White during a recent media scrum (thanks to for the quotes). "Mir just lost. Who's had more title shots for the heavyweight division in the UFC than Frank Mir? For him to get the opportunity to go fight Cormier, and Cormier to have the opportunity to fight Mir, it really does make sense."

Cormier is expected to move to the UFC after the fight. It is still unknown if the Cormier-Mir bout will be three or five rounds, or if Cormier's title will be on the line.
