The long-awaited fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao has been dubbed the fight of the century, and according to the Wall Street Journal, the cost will also be the price of the century.
The fight that took close to six years to make happen will finally take place May 2 at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand. While tickets will cost between $1,500 and $10,000, the pay-per-view price is being discussed to be around $99 for a high-definition feed, while a standard-definition feed would go for $89. The previous record price was $74.95 for a high-definition feed and $64.95 for standard definition.
The fight is already expected to break all kinds of records. Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum, said they expect the gate to make close to $74 million, eclipsing the previous record of $20 million. Promoters are also expecting close to 3 million pay-per-view buys just in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico markets, which would mean $300 million in just the TV audience. The previous record for TV views is $152 million for the Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez fight. If this number is anywhere near what it will actually be, the fight could end up making more than $400 million in total revenue.
