Floyd Mayweather vs. 50 Cent: A Complete Recap of this Stupid Beef

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and 50 Cent are beefing. It is impossible to say whether this thing is real or not, just because both have a very long history of using fake controversy for financial gain, but they’re definitely at least acting like it's real. In order to understand this possibly real, but probably fake dispute, we have to start at the beginning.

Over the past year, up until Mayweather went to jail for assaulting the mother of his children (again), we began to see him and 50 Cent together at basically all times. It felt like Floyd replaced Tony Yayo as 50’s official sidekick – with the only exception being that they alternated the sidekick role. When 50 was at one of his movie premieres, Mayweather was Robin. When Mayweather was at one of his fights, they swapped positions. Either way, they were together a lot. To the point where it became sort of bizarre, actually.

As their bond grew stronger and stronger, the pair decided to take the next step and commit to a business venture together. They were going to start a boxing promotion company, because those are always successful. When buzz about this company reached an all-time high, we began hearing that 50 could be the man to put Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao together. But then things took a turn for the not-so-good.

Mayweather’s baby mama drama landed him in jail. 50 started taking pictures with Pacquiao. There were rumors that Mayweather’s fiancée messed around with 50 while he was serving his time. 50 came out and publicly admitted that he and Mayweather were beefing, but that he still liked his ex-BFF. Mayweather stopped talking about being friends with 50. Pacquiao and 50 decided to go into business together. Finally, this week, things got ugly.

Alright, here is the deal: 50 Cent is a terrible rapper who has kept himself relevant thanks to style, not substance. Fake beefs. Fake image. Fake promises. This is how 50 got to the top. And that’s fine. When you’re worth $100+ million, nobody really cares how you arrived to that total. But it’s important to remember that 50’s biggest actual accomplishments, the ones that you and I know him for, are things that he got a lot of help with. GRODT would not have been what it was sans hype and some really great production. The Vitamin Water deal, 50’s pride and joy, was negotiated by Chris Lighty. (Lighty is also the one who, reportedly, made sure his client got stock in the company.)

When he isn’t getting help from people who actually know how to do stuff, 50’s fallback maneuver is stirring up manufactured, fake beef. And he is the one who fired the first shots in this new soap opera-esque war, not Mayweather.

That said, Mayweather (an incredibly boring fighter) has risen to fame thanks to his ability to make the lead-up to his fights more interesting than the fights themselves. He might be one of the all-time greats, but his defense-oriented, counter-punching style has never been viewer friendly. The reason Mayweather has set the PPV records that he has set and reached the level of prominence that he has reached is because of his ability to create fake drama, too.

This could just be a huge ploy by both sides to drum up publicity. Then again, we said the same thing about Game and 50, and they still seem to hate one another all these years later.

Frankly, the idea of 50 and Mayweather suddenly becoming best friends was more weird than their current beef. Them not liking one another is actually more believable than the levels of friendship they exhibited during the heyday of their strange relationship.

The most important takeaway from this whole thing: it’s 6:52 a.m. and I just spent 20 minutes on a possibly manufactured beef between a washed up rapper, and a fighter who has been ducking someone -- who he could probably beat -- for like three years now. I really don't even care that much. I’m going back to sleep.
