Edwin Rodriguez, who replaced Fredi Gonzalez as manager of the Florida Marlins last June 23, turned in his resignation Sunday morning. The team reports that officials and players learned of the news about two hours before the Marlins interleague game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Bench coach Brandon Hyde was designated as manager for Sunday’s game, but Larry Beinfest, president of baseball operations, said the team would immediately look for an interim manager to finish out the season. Jack McKeon, who guided the team to the 2003 World Series title, appears to be the likely candidate for the interim job.
The Marlins have lost 17 of their last 18 games and considering the team’s rapid descent from 10 games over .500 and a game out of first on May 26 to seven games under .500 and 12 games out in a span of just over three weeks, a change in manager is not a surprise. What is a surprise is the fact that Rodriguez resigned.
Resigning because your team is underperforming is a cowardly act. It’s giving up, it’s committing baseball suicide. Hanley Ramirez is having a dreadful season. Some of his problems have been that he hasn’t been healthy, but when he has been out there he’s stunk up the joint. How would we be looking at Ramirez if he just said, “I quit, I’m not playing anymore”? The season isn’t over, the Marlins come into Sunday at 32-39 and there is 55% of the season still left to play. Where’s the battle, where’s the fight?
There was a big deal made when Rodriguez was named the Marlins manager last year as he was the first native of Puerto Rico to manage in the majors. Not only did he just give up on his team, he gave up on his nation.
Edwin Rodriguez, shame on you. Not only did you give up on the men in uniform that went to battle for you, you just embarrassed the proud people of Puerto Rico who were so proud to have one of their own managing a MLB team. There’s no way your family could be proud of you on this Father’s Day.
Trivia question: If there is one person in the world that you would want in a fox hole with you, who would it be?
Answer: Anyone but Edwin Rodriguez.
