Update: Now he's dead.
The boxing world found itself in a state of mourning earlier today when it was reported that boxing legend Emanuel Steward had died at the age of 68.
Apparently that report was erroneous, though. According to his family, Steward is still alive.
"At this point, I'm asking EVERYBODY to LEAVE US ALONE so that we can comfort and communicate with Emanuel," Steward's sister Diane Steward-Jones emailed to the Free Press (via USA Today).
"His surgical team just dropped by and scoffed at the reports he is dead."
Tom Leyden of WXYZ.com passed along this statement from the family:
"You can tell folks that he is alive and being treated by some of the best experts in the world. The Steward family is dismayed and greatly disheartened and disappointed that during this personally challenging time, people would callously and thoughtlessly run wild with untrue statements in order to garner their '15 minutes of fame.'
"Where is the moral compass of those seeking to capitalize on this situation? Does anybody take the time to check out the facts anymore?
"Many of those issuing reckless statements have our phone numbers as well as Emanuel's office number and yet, they haven't called, just issued statements that are terrorizing Emanuel's children, siblings and relatives that aren't able to be here at the hospital.
"SHAME ON THEM! He has feelings and we, his family, have feelings. Consider that and give us our privacy to help our loved ones."
The Detroit Free Press wrote an article earlier in the day noting that Steward’s friends had confirmed to them that he had died. They have since amended the report and apologized for their mistake.
Steward has been hospitalized with a stomach disorder ever since September of this year. As of now, aside from the fact that underwent successful surgery, there is no information available on his current status.
