Boise State's Kyle Brotzman may have forgotten to lick the stamp, but the rest of the Broncos forgot to seal the envelope. While I've seen plenty of Boise State blame going around this morning, I have yet to see anyone credit the Nevada defense, Colin Kaepernick, or the Nevada Wolfpack team.
While Kyle Brotzman gets all the blame for missing the two chip-shot field goals last night, the first one which would have decided the game, and the second one would have at the very least prolonged the game, the fact is that other than two long plays, the Nevada Wolfpack unquestionably outplayed the Boise State Broncos for the entire second half. Boise State was forced to punt on their first four offensive possessions to begin the second half. By the time the Broncos scored, Nevada had reeled off 17-consecutive points to tie the game at 24 with 5:14 remaining in the game.
After leading 24-7 at the half, the Nevada held the Boise State Broncos scoreless in the second half until Kellen Moore checked a pass down to running back Doug Martin for a 79-yard touchdown to take a 31-24 lead. After Martin's scored the Broncos defense couldn't hold as it was exhausted and been on the field nearly the entire second half. Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick, capping off a sensational season, answered with an instrumental 14-play drive lasting 4:38 that covered 79 yards stunning everyone watching, including the Boise State defense. Surely this performance gets Kaepernick and invitation to the Downtown Athletic Club.
The blow Nevada sent to Boise State last night sent shock waves reverberating throughout the BCS as wins form Wisconsin, LSU, Stanford and Ohio State will now leapfrog any and all of them. TCU has a cream puff game against New Mexico and a loss by either Oregon against archival Oregon State or an Auburn loss to South Carolina next week would vault TCU into the National Championship game. While it's hard to see the Ducks losing to the Beavers, it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility the 18th ranked Gamecocks can win their home game against the Tigers.- Mike Cardano
