Dirk Nowitzki has Knee Surgery, Will be Out 6 Weeks

The Dallas Mavericks announced out of the blue that their franchise player, Dirk Nowitzki, had arthroscopic knee surgery. He had been experiencing pain and swelling recently. The surgery will knock Dirk out for the next six weeks.

He had planned to play on it as long as he could but I'm guessing he got advised that he should take care of it now before it gets worse. It would've been a big blow had he played on it and had the knee scope later in the year.

Dallas is a completely revamped team for the 2012-13 season. Mavericks mainstay Jason Terry has moved on to Boston and Jason Kidd went to New York. The rest of the offense falls on ex-Grizzly O.J. Mayo, Darren Collison, ex-Clippers Elton Brand and Chris Kaman, and maybe Brandan Wright will shoulder the load more. Heck, maybe Rick Carlisle will play Roddy Beaubois for extended minutes.

Dirk averaged 21.6 points per game in what was considered to be a down 2011-12 season (when they were swept in the first round by Oklahoma City). He led the Mavericks to a title in 2011, winning the NBA Finals MVP. Dirk also won the regular-season MVP award in 2007.
