Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush expressed support yesterday for Minnesota Vikings player Adrian Peterson, who was indicted last week for reckless or negligent injury to a child.
Peterson admitted that he used a switch to spank his his 4-year-old son, but denies it was abuse or criminal.
The Vikings said today that Peterson was placed on the NFL exempt/commissioner's permission list, which means Peterson cannot take part in any team activities until his legal situation is settled. He may or may not be paid while on this suspension, notes SBNation.com.
According to NFL.com, Bush told the "Boomer & Carton" sports radio show yesterday how Peterson is a "good guy" and "should definitely be allowed to play football."
Bush recalled how he got "whoppings" with "belts and stuff like that" when he was growing up (audio below). Radio host Craig Carlton asked Bush if he would "use that method of punishment [on] a 4-year-old or 5-year-old."
"I have a 1-year-old daughter, and I discipline her," stated Bush. "Obviously, every person is different, and I definitely will use my best judgment to discipline her depending on the situation on what happens. I definitely will try to, obviously not leave bruises or anything like that on her, but I definitely will discipline her harshly depending on, again, what the situation is."
Carlton asked Bush if he would "consider using a switch" on his child.
"I would possibly consider, depending on what she did, like I said," added Bush. "Like I said, I have a 1-year-old, and they're gonna get in trouble, they're gonna do things, and all you can do is use your best judgment, and that's what I'm going to do, I'm going to use my best judgment."
"And I'm not saying that I'm not going to spank her, but because, hopefully, she won't do anything bad enough where I have to," said Bush. "But also, at the same time, kids are gonna be kids. Whatever I do, whatever discipline I give her, it's always out of love, and it's always because I want the best for her, for my daughter, for my kids."
However, today, Bush walked back his comments, noted ESPN.
"Obviously I'm not going to be spanking a 1-year-old girl," Bush stated. "We do discipline her a little bit because she does this thing now where if she doesn't like something or if you say something to her she doesn't like, she kind of swings at you."
"So we're already starting to implement little things like talking to her and saying that's not OK. I think obviously people took it too far and [said] I was doing much worse, and that's not the case," claimed Bush.
