NBA Fantasy: Dirk Nowitzki, Luol Deng, Channing Frye. Derrick Rose

Day 115 of 170: Don’t Count Your MVPs Before They Hatch

Line of the Night: The chants of M-V-P rained down like… well, like they have for the past 3 months in the United Center as Derrick Rose (2.36) led the Bulls over the Spurs with 42 points (18-28 from the field, 6-6 from the line), 5 rebounds, and 8 assists. It got up to 58 degrees in Chicago yesterday, so I was not surprised to see a rose blooming. But now it’s back to just above freezing, and the cold makes me realize that despite the coming spring, I should not hold out too much hope for the little Rose that grew from the concrete sidewalks that I tread daily.

Honorable Mentions: I’m sure you agree that any further descriptions on my part will seem like a mere candle compared the utter flaming wreckage that was that preceding paragraph. So, let’s just rip through the two games from last night like a high school football team through a homecoming banner.

Dirk Nowitzki (2.03) had 35 points (3 threes, 13-18 from the field, 6-6 from the line) and 4 assists. One of my co-workers was counting on another mediocre performance, but it seemed Dirk wanted to remind people that he was once an MVP.

Luol Deng (1.69) had 19 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 blocks. Channing Frye (1.33) confined to earn his keep by making shots, en route to 24 points (3 threes, 9-15 from the field), and 8 rebounds.

Tony Parker (1.32) did his best to offset Rose’s performance, but come on, what kind of poetic metaphors can you make with Parker? Anyway, TP had 26 points (4-4 from the line), 4 assists, and 2 steals. And I guess there were 4 teams with strong Point Guards playing last night because next up is another former MVP, Steve Nash (1.14), with 15 points (6-10 from the field), 5 rebounds, and 14 assists. The Point Guard round up ends with old man Jason Kidd (0.96) who had 6 points, 8 rebounds, and 12 assists.

Waiver Wire Line of the Night: At 38%, Robin Lopez (1.06) is probably at his ownership zenith, but it certainly wouldn’t kill you to take some time out from partying with JR Smith and Russell Westbrook to look at the guy who had 13 points (6-9 from the field), 13 rebounds, and 2 blocks last night. Then again, most people consider 13 an unlucky number.

Pick Up Lines: Gary Neal (0.73) is going to come up with some nice games every once in a while, and his 16 points with 4 threes and 6-9 from the field is his 3rd nice game in a row, so take a look at the guy who’s stealing minutes away from former pick-up George Hill.

How many owners are waiting to pounce on Peja Stojakovic (0.55) as soon as shows the slightest inkling that he might be returning to world of the living basketball players? I mean, even a zombie Stojakovic could do better than 10 points and 2 steals. Oh, and the answer to the previous question is: about 88% of them.

We’re scraping the barrel with only two games played, because even though I like Taj Gibson (0.40), the Bulls man in the middle Joakim Noah is coming back pretty soon, which means Gibson’s 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks is on the high end of what you’ll get from him going forward.

Biggest Loser:DeJuan Blair (-0.17) did not do much to advance the Spurs attack against the Bulls. And now that I’ve written that I’m tempted to go with some sort of matador joke, but his defense was actually okay (2 steals and 1 block) but the rest of his 20-minutes of stats will make you cringe just as much as my attempts at humor: 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 0 assists. I hope no one started him despite the Spurs having 2 games this week, because his combined line ended up at 16 points (5-10 and 6-10), 14 rebounds, 0 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, and 5 turnovers.
