Dana White Not Pleased with Clay Guida's UFC on FX 4 Showing?

Publish date:

Last night's UFC on FX 4 lightweight tilt between Gray Maynard and Clay Guida was a lot of things, but it was hardly the barnburner we expected it to be.

The normally hyper-aggressive Guida employed a gameplan that we'll politely refer to as elusive. He forced Maynard to chase him down and was rarely there to be hit; the only problem was that he rarely hit back himself. At one point (a point too late), Guida was even warned for not engaging his opponent and being too timid in the fight.

Stranger things have been witnessed in MMA, but only a few.

In the end, Maynard was able to pin Guida down and put together some effective offense, enough to earn him the split decision nod from the judges. Paying attention to UFC president Dana White's increasingly agitated Twitter feed during the fight, it was easy to see his frustration with the normally fan-friendly Guida.

Speaking with Ariel Helwani on the Fuel TV aftershow, White expounded on his agitation with The Carpenter's performance.

"Listen, I'm not a trainer and I'm not a cornerman for anybody, but, you know, after being around the fight -- you don't wanna fight by running. Ever," White stated. "You know? And there's a lot of Clay fans out there that I saw on Twitter saying, 'Great footwork!' Yeah, his footwork looked real great. I mean, this is a fight and the thing about Clay Guida is, Clay Guida's a fighter. This guy always moves forward, he's in your face, he's aggressive. And Clay's one of these guys, he's not the most talented mixed martial artist in the world; he's an aggressive, in-your-face guy that wears you out and ends up beating you or goes out on his shield. He's one of those guys and some goof put in his head that running around in circles might win him the fight and they were dead wrong."
