DaMarcus Smith to Pass on Louisville, Head to UCF?

According to Jason Higdon, a contributor from Florida, Seneca quarterback DaMarcus Smith did indeed fax a signed letter of intent to Central Florida and will officially announce it tomorrow. DaMarcus has been committed to Louisville pretty much since the moment Charlie Strong was hired, but apparently, now feels UCF is the best spot for him.

Obviously, I’m not privy to the discussions in the Smith household and I definitely do not know what goes on inside his head, but from where I’m sitting, I think this is a poor decision by DaMarcus.

Quite frankly, I just don’t get it.

Forget about the C-USA vs. BCS school argument, just compare the quarterback situations. Central Florida went 10-2 with a Liberty Bowl win over Georgia behind a freshman quarterback, not to mention they have three other quarterbacks listed on their roster. Louisville, on the other hand, has true freshman Teddy Bridgewater and junior Will Stein. In other words, an open competition (technically, Dominique Brown is still listed as a quarterback, but I’ll be stunned if he finishes his career at that position).

When you look at the two situations, I think my confusion is easily understood. There are probably a million things involved with this decision we either don’t know about or never will know, but from what I’ve seen, read, and heard, I think one school has fed him a bunch of things he wants to hear.

I realize some UofL fans will, and already have, start the “he’s scared of Teddy Bridgewater” or “he’s running from competition” talk. I can’t say I disagree with the sentiment, but I don’t think that’s the appropriate way to react If you’re disappointed, that’s fine, but don’t become bitter or spiteful over a decision of an 18 year old.

I genuinely wish this kid the best if he indeed chooses to leave the city and hope this is the best decision for him. I’m not in his shoes and like I said, I don’t know what’s going on in his head. You just hope he’s doing it for the right reasons and doesn’t come to regret it down the road.
