The highly anticipated first meeting between former UK first round picks will have to wait another day. With the Kings and Wizards squaring off in Sacramento, fans were supposed to be treated to a game that featured former UK top five picks in DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall. Didn’t happen.
The public address announcer for the Kings announced John Wall as a starter, but the no. 1 overall pick never left the bench. He sat out with a sore foot. It is the fifth game that he has missed this season, the previous games missed were because of a sprained ankle. In Tuesday’s loss to the Lakers, he had 22 points and a season-high 14 assists.
Without Wall, the Kings took care of the Wizards, 116-91, snapping their eight-game losing streak.
Cousins started the game and finished with 10 points, five rebounds and five fouls in 24 minutes. After the game he downplayed the significance of playing his former teammate for the first time, but said he didn’t mind that the speedy guard had to watch from the bench.
“It made the game a lot easier for us,” Cousins said. “His foot was bothering him. I know he really wished he was out there playing.”
After being moved to the bench five games into the season, Cousins found his way back into the starting lineup three games ago. In those three games, he is averaging 14.0 points and 7.7 rebounds. What may be more impressive is that he is averaging nearly 28.0 minutes of action in those three games.
Wall has been playing with an injured left foot for much of the season. He did warm up with the team, but the foot was bothering him and he was a late scratch.
His 127 assists through his first 14 career games represent the second-highest rookie total in NBA history. Phil Ford had 135 assists through his first 14 career games for the Kansas City Kings during the 1978-79 season.
Overall, he is averaging 17.4 points, 9.1 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 2.4 steals.
Eric Bledsoe continues to start for the Clippers as he has no started 20 of their 23 games. In their 87-86 loss to the Lakers last night, he finished with 11 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and five turnovers.
His overall numbers are 8.6 points, 5.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 turnovers.
