Manchester United stormed into the fourth round of the FA Cup following a solitary goal win over rivals Liverpool. A side that resembled any Premier League fixture started the game, with Berbatov and Hernández leading the United front line. Liverpool have had a terrible season so far, but under the tutelage of new manager and club legend Kenny Dalglish, would certainly be looking to progress in the Cup.The game, that did not pose too many chances, was ultimately decided upon two separate incidents, the first coming within the first couple of minutes of the game.
Dimitar Berbatov found himself in some space in the box, and while trying to get past Agger, appeared to go down under a challenge from the Danish defender, albeit belatedly. Replays showed that there certainly was some contact, but Berbatov might have stayed on his feet. Either way, Ryan Giggs took the resulting penalty and made no mistake — United in front in under two minutes.
The second came half an hour later when Michael Carrick and Steven Gerrard both went in for a 50/50, with the United man coming out the worse of the two. He seemed quite badly injured, and replays showed that Gerrard had jumped in with two feet — a definite red card. And Howard Webb used his experience to make no mistake, and gave the Liverpool captain his marching orders.
Apart from these two moments, there wasn’t anything really of note in the game, apart from a time when Reina produced a series of saves to keep United out. Despite the man advantage, United were unable to build on the goal, and the game finished at 1-0, with United progressing to the next round at the expense of our bitter rivals.
