Columbus Crew midfielder Kirk Urso died on Saturday night at the age of 22.
His club made the somber announcement on their official website.
“The Columbus Crew has learned that midfielder Kirk Urso has passed away on Saturday night. While the circumstances of Urso’s passing are still being determined, no further comments will be made at this time,” the statement read.
“The thoughts and prayers of the entire Columbus Crew and Hunt Sports Group are with the Urso family in this time of need.”
Urso was a first-round selection in this year’s MLS Supplemental Draft. He underwent surgery for tendinitis in April and had been sidelined ever since.
He played soccer for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels from 2008 to 2011, and was a member of the U.S. under-17 World Cup team in 2007.
