College Football Recruiting: Jamari Smith is a Huge Pick-Up for South Carolina

The Gamecocks picked up commitment number 19 on Sunday when running back Jamari Smith committed to South Carolina.

Smith is from Neptune Beach, Florida and plays football at Fletcher High School. According to, he's the 16th ranked all-purpose back in the class of 2013. He's also the 69th ranked player in the state of Florida as well. He's listed at 5'10" tall and checking in at 195 pounds. His 40-yard dash time is listed at 4.40 and this may be a big reason why he's a commitment for the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks are extremely loaded at the running back position in the future. Lattimore will likely be gone after the 2012 season, but South Carolina will still have Brandon Wilds, Mike Davis and Shon Carson on campus to carry the load. Wilds and Davis are more North-South runners in style but Smith may be more like Carson in the fact that he's a smaller, but quicker, running back. In the highlight video above, he's got the necessary speed to give a bit of a different look than what Gamecock fans are used to seeing out of the backfield.

Now, South Carolina was heavily involved in the recruitment of David Williams and Greg Bryant. Both players were in the mix for the Gamecocks with some thinking that South Carolina could have potentially landed either player. Bryant is a current Oklahoma commitment but many thought he could switch to South Carolina. Williams is from the north with Penn State as the likely destination but South Carolina has been able to stay at the top for him.

It's unsure at this time what this means for the recruitment of those two. Maybe the Gamecocks will continue to push forward for either one unless Smith is the lone running back in this recruiting class. If that's the case, then you can likely end the thought of landing either Williams or Bryant. However, if Smith is recruited as an athlete, then you could see South Carolina applying pressure on either one of the two.

Right now, I'd say its unlikely we'll see Williams or Bryant in a Gamecock uniform. The recruiting numbers are tight for the Gamecocks as they look to close out this class. However, they did land a very good player in Jamari Smith who rushed for 24 touchdowns and over 2,000 yards as a junior. He definitely has the skills to fit in with this offense.

Welcome aboard Jamari Smith!
