College Football: Oklahoma Linebacker Austin Box Dead at Age 22

Oklahoma Sooners starting middle linebacker, Austin Box, was pronounced dead on Thursday. The 22-year-old star was reportedly found unresponsive at a house in El Reno, Okla. late Wednesday night, and got airlifted to Mercy Hospital nearby Oklahoma City.

While the medical examiner confirmed that Box has passed away, no official cause of death has yet been presented. According to Fox 25 in Oklahoma City, however, a police report cited that Box took an unnamed “controlled dangerous substance" and that the death may have come as a result of an overdose.  

David Boren, the school’s president, released this statement on the matter:

"The University family is deeply saddened by the tragic death of student-athlete Austin Box. Our hearts go out to his family and friends."

The school athletic director, Joe Casiglione also released a statement:

"Austin Box will be greatly missed by his many friends and teammates in the Athletics Department and all across campus. Grief counseling is being made available to members of the team and his close friends."

No further details on the death are available as of this time.
