College Football Conference Power Rankings: Week 8

The two best conferences in the country, incidentally, are represented in the top of the national rankings by their respective remaining undefeated teams. Auburn heads the SEC after prevailing in their showdown with LSU on the strength of Cameron Newton’s all-around offensive play, taking over the top spot in the BCS standings in the process. Right behind them is Oregon, class of the Pac-10 after blowing out one Los Angeles school in Autzen on Thursday and about to go for a Gameday visit to Troy to take on the fallen former champs.

The battle is on well in the distance behind them as the Big XII and Big Ten swap spots this week for the bronze position in the rankings. Oklahoma is no longer #1, but they remain formidable in the rankings along with their conqueror Missouri and the Tigers’ Week 9 opponent, Nebraska. Mizzou now stands as the only remaining undefeated team in the conference right now, Oklahoma State having fallen to the Cornhuskers on a big rebound day from Taylor Martinez. The Big Ten couldn’t hold as much ground, as Michigan State remained undefeated with a late surge over Northwestern. But it has been Wisconsin lately who looks the class of the conference (despite their head-to-head 34-24 loss to the Spartans in East Lansing) after knocking off Ohio State and Iowa in successive weeks.

Right behind them, as per usual, is not the remaining BCS conferences but the duo of non-AQ leagues at the heart of the BCS controversy this season. If the remaining undefeateds in the big four conferences fail to stay that way at the end of the season, and both Boise State and the winner of the TCU-Utah matchup do emerge unscathed, will one or both play for a title? Conventional wisdom says they’d lose the benefit of the doubt? But why, when they have proven themselves so much better than both the ACC and Big East the past few years?

But I digress. Let’s just dive right in and take a look at the numbers. They speak for themselves…
