Coach K: Trading Andrew Wiggins For Kevin Love A No-Brainer

It’s the offseason in the NBA, and that means basketball fans everywhere are either bored out of their minds or following the latest free agency and trade rumors. Those of you opting to do the latter are probably well aware that the Cavaliers and the Timberwolves are currently discussing a swap that would bring Kevin Love to Cleveland and send Andrew Wiggins to the Wolves.

The Cavs seem to be on the fence about whether they’re willing to part ways with Wiggins, the first overall pick in this year’s draft, or not. Love represents an immediate, elite payoff, but Wiggins has unlimited potential and could carry the torch once LeBron hits his inevitable decline in five years or so.

While Cavs management can’t seem to make up their mind about the trade, one brilliant basketball mind out their already has: Coach K.

The legendary Duke coach told John Feinstein of CBS Radio that he would trade for Love “right away” if he were the Cavaliers.

“He’s a double-double guy, but he’s a double-double guy that can spread the court,” Coach K said. “There aren’t many double-double guys, if any, who spread the court. He can go inside and outside…. No pun intended, but I love Kevin Love.”

Krzyzewski also said that LeBron’s age and career window makes trading for Love the smart move as well.

“You look at LeBron and you have the best player in the world,” Krzyzewski said. “He’s 29. I’m not saying he’s at the end of his career, but he’s in the second half of his career, let’s put it that way. And in the first half of his career, he was becoming a great player. He was a great talent becoming a great player. That takes time – just like if Wiggins or Bennett are going to be great, it’s not going to happen right now. They’re great talents. LeBron is a great player right now.”

If the goal in Cleveland is to win as many championships as possible in the next five years – and why wouldn’t it be – then it’s hard to disagree with Coach K here.
