Charles Barkley Rips Rockets GM Daryl Morey, Slams NBA Analytics (Video)

TNT’s Charles Barkley had some words for Rockets GM Daryl Morey after he called out Barkley on Twitter for saying the Rockets defense was the worst in the NBA.

Best part of being at a TNT game live is it is easy to avoid Charles spewing misinformed biased vitriol disguised as entertainment

“I’m not worried about Daryl Morey,” Barkley said. “He’s one of those idiots who believes in analytics.”

Barkley then went on a long rant about how analytics don’t work, and the only reason people came up with the term is to try “to fit in.”

“Analytics don’t work at all. It’s just some crap that some people who were really smart made up to try to get in the game because they had no talent. Because they had no talent to be able to play, so smart guys wanted to fit in, so they made up a term called analytics.

“All these guys who run these organizations, who talk about analytics, they have one thing in common: They’re a bunch of guys who never played the game and they never got the girls in high school.”

Barkley continued to criticize analytics and alleged NBA Champions San Antonio Spurs don’t use analytics. Instead, it’s just good coaching and good players, he commented.

During Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in 2013, Spurs’ GM R.C. Bufford talked about the importance of analytics:

"I don't think 'analytics' is limited to number-crunching. An approach of wanting to be thoughtful, of wanting to analyze all the situations … and then determining if the numbers fit what the system is — I think if somebody doesn't have that type of approach, it would cause me pause to want to bring that person into our organization because I think the decisions that happen throughout the course of a season can't be done without an approach of heavy analysis.”

Like anything else, if used correctly, analytics can be beneficial — although there is the potential to overlook other critical aspects of the game. But if the San Antonio Spurs use analytics, then Barkley’s credibility goes out the window when he says “analytics are crap.”
