Chael Sonnen: "There's No Question I Could Beat Jon Jones"

Publish date:

Chael Sonnen likely enjoyed the immediate backlash that hit UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones after it was confirmed that Jones declined facing Sonnen. Word broke Thursday that Jones turned down the fight, and while Sonnen understands the reasons behind it, that didn't keep him from taking a few shots at "Bones."

"This was his biggest opportunity. There's no question I could beat Jon Jones," said Sonnen, in an interview with "Jon Jones can beat me too. But I can beat him, If you ever wanted to stack the deck in his favor, you'd have done it on September 1. You'd have called me out of the blue, switched weight classes on me, put me on a plane to do a press tour, put me everyone in the world except in the practice room. That was the opportunity he had. I could have beaten him, but he could have beaten me, too."

Instead, UFC president Dana White called off the first UFC event in 11 years. Jones will now face Lyoto Machida for a second time in September at UFC 151: Jones vs. Machida II.

The loss of profit by the UFC, the fighters on the card, and even Sonnen didn't go unnoticed on the conference call Thursday or by Sonnen himself.

"Jon Jones is a delusional brat," Sonnen said. "He talks of being a business man. What? What risks did he take? What capital did he raise? Where exactly is his office located? How many people does he employ? Hey JJ, put me on the phone with your secretary....oh wait, what?"
