According to California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd, Chael Sonnen has been informed that he failed post-fight drug screening, which took place after his UFC 117 loss to Anderson Silva.
“[Sonnen] received his notice yesterday,” Dodd told Sherdog.com after the Shane Mosley/Sergio Mora boxing match Saturday night.
In an interview on Friday, Dodd told Sherdog.com that all fighters from UFC 117 had passed drugs-of-abuse scans, but that they were waiting on the final performance-enhancing drug screens from that event. Dodd did not state which banned substance Sonnen was flagged for, but with every fighter testing clean for drugs-of-abuse, it is crystal clear that the positive test was for a performance-enhancing substance.
Anderson Silva’s manager Ed Soares had the following to say on the news:
“If it’s true, I feel really bad for him. I know he did it to himself but it is really sad, he put on such a great performance that night. It is just a shame it will be tarnished.”
If Sonnen has indeed failed a PED test, the proposed rematch with Anderson Silva in February would most certainly be off the docket, as Sonnen would face a yearlong suspension.
I hope this isn’t true, but it doesn’t look good for Sonnen. I thought Anderson hit Chael with some nice shots during the fight when they were standing, but Sonnen shrugged them off, which would fall right in line with these allegations.
I don’t have any sympathy for steroids users, and a yearlong ban would be fine by me.
