A former NFL wide receiver will be heading to jail after annoying a Florida judge by patting his lawyer's rear end while he was negotiating a plea deal.
Chad Johnson will spend 30 days behind bars after he "playfully slapped" the buttocks of his lawyer, Adam Swickle, in front of Judge Kathleen McHugh. Johnson was in court because of a parole violation stemming from a domestic violence case involving his ex-wife, Evelyn Lozada.
Swickle had reached a deal with prosecutors calling for community service and counseling instead of jail. That was until Johnson decided to get cute in front of the judge.
"I don't know that you're taking this whole thing seriously," McHugh said. "I just saw you slap your attorney on the backside. Is there something funny about this? The whole courtroom was laughing. I'm not going to accept these plea negotiations. This isn't a joke."
The 35-year-old former star tried to apologize, The Huffington Post reported.
“This is your courtroom," Johnson told the judge. "I have no intent to make this a joke. It's not funny. My life is in a shambles right now and I try my best to laugh and keep a smile on my face."
The comment wasn’t enough to change McHugh’s mind.
"It's not the first time he's behaved that way in my courtroom," she said.
Johnson took to Twitter after the incident: “Love me through the good and the bad because I'm gone love you regardless... See you in 30.”
