Carmelo Anthony Unsure About Nuggets' Offer

The Denver Nuggets have Carmelo Anthony under contract for one more year. They also have an offer on the table that is a three-year extension worth $65 million. Easy decision, right?

Nope, the offer has been on the table since June and Carmelo is still undecided.

“I could wake up tomorrow and they could snatch it off the table,” Anthony said. “I don’t know. I don’t know what their mind-set is.”

Anthony simply replied “no,” when asked if he had a timetable for signing the extension.

I’m just taking my time with it,” he said. “Obviously, everybody knows I’m loyal to the Denver Nuggets community and to the Denver Nuggets. I’ve shown that over my seven-year stint here. I don’t think anybody can question that. But at this point in time, I have to do what’s best for me and my family. I’m just taking my time, figuring out if I want to take that extension or not.”

Ok, that’s the part we don’t get. What’s best for your family is securing a guaranteed $65 million before something happens like a torn ACL. That would be best for your family. I’m not so sure your family really cares if you are getting enough open looks in an offense better suited to your strengths.

I understand that these guys want to maximize their earning during their brief careers. I understand that he might want to win a championship and maybe doesn’t feel like Denver has a chance to do that. I get that.

But in the game of life, you never know what can happen. That’s $65 million you’ll put in your pocket. And it’s only three years! It’s not like a 10-year deal. Play out the extra three years, pockey the dough and then decide if you want to join a contender.
